Different from anything yet published on Game of Thrones, Interpreting Game of Thrones mobilizes fields as diverse as philosophy, literary theory, and psychoanalysis in order to understand this wildly popular franchise.

Moving beyond plot summary or superficial character analysis, Gallegos, himself a literary scholar, conducts 9 careful readings of the TV show and books, all of them written in an accessible style.

The reader will never experience Game of Thrones the same way again.

Interpreting Game of Thrones eBook Gene Gallegos

I should have checked the page count -turns out its 21 pages of double spaced text - with more blank space then text) a lot more closely. Did you ever notice those pages in books that say "THIS PAGE INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK" WELL THAT SHOULD BE THE TITLE OF THIS BOOK. What tiny amount of writing there is, is more or less interesting, but written in a very sloppy way, perhaps while the author was on a bender for all it shows, and with grammer mistakes a' plenty. But there's hardly enough to fill a greeting card! I know it's only a dollar, fact is it ought to be free, i've read better and longer essays in "Thrones" forums. It's a waste of a dollar. Each paragraph should have been the INTRO to a much much longer chapter on the topics this here pamphlet discusses so briefly, dealing with fleeting glances at three or four of the larger topics dealt with in "Thrones" - sex, rape, sovereignty, gold, a couple other topics...there's not enough material here to get you through a sitdown at the loo, and that's what i'd like to do with this tiny meager book FLUSH IT - because that's what I feel I did to my dollar when i bought it.

Interpreting Game of Thrones eBook Gene Gallegos Reviews

I'm shocked to see all of these positive reviews, and have to wonder if they're from friends of the author.

The analysis in this book is unsophisticated both in terms of its use of theory and in its reading of the Game of Thrones text. Theoretically, the book is superficial. The author doesn't seem to have a comprehensive or even satisfactory understanding of the academic literature on the concepts and thinkers he cites. For example, he simply accepts the Westphalian account of sovereignty even though Game of Thrones is set in a largely fuedal world. Fuedal sovereignty is nested rather than unitary like modern sovereignty, and acknowledging this would undermine his entire argument in the sovereignty section. When the points made are compelling, it's only because Gallegos is shooting fish in a barrell (for instance, it is obvious to the point of being trivial to argue that economic rationality can never be purely calculative and necessarily involves an element of persuasion). He also makes classic lit crit mistakes like tossing together very different thinkers (e.g. Derrida & Freud) without making any attempt to reconcile them.

In terms of the Game of Thrones text, the analysis is also surface-level. Inconvenient facts are simply referenced and then ignored even when they disrupt the author's narrative. For example, the author tries to argue that the Starks are anti-sovereignty. But this argument only works if you overlook the ways the Starks did indeed seek sovereignty. Not only was Robb Stark a King in the North, he also sought the throne of Westeros (or at least to free his Northern Kingdom from its vassalship to the Iron Throne). Actually attempting to deal with these inconvenient facts could lead the author in some interesting directions - what does Robb's failed attempt to break the shackles of fuedal sovereignty tell us about modernity in the world of Game of Thrones? - but none of these are explored. None of the intricate details of the plot or world of Game of Thrones are explored, either. All the information about the ASOIAF books presented in this book could have come from Wikipedia. I've encountered much deeper, more thoughtful engagements with this text on Reddit and YouTube.

Also, this "book" is just way too short to really be considered a "book." It's more of a pamphlet. It took me maybe 30 minutes to read.

At best, this book is written at the level of a good undergraduate thesis; at times, it's even worse. You might enjoy it if you know little about literary criticism and Game of Thrones and you happen to have Unlimited, but definitely don't waste any money on this one.
This book makes complicated jargon-laden arguments accessible to the general public in a smart compact take on a pop cultural phenomenon. The book analyzes a variety of motifs from a critical perspective, in intuitive and naturalistic prose. I have similar ideas to some of those presented in the book, in particular the analysis of debt. An original perspective makes me see a show I watch in a new light.
This is a great analysis of the series that I will definitely be recommending to my friends. The author provides a fresh outlook and perspective to scenes that have otherwise been discussed at long length. The book is insightful and reads more as a philosophical work than a simple plot summary which is a refreshing change. Highly recommend!
excellent analysis and writing style, would recommend to a friend!
This short book does a wonderful job getting to the heart of key concepts and themes that underlie the Game of Thrones series. I have confidence that having it as a resource will deepen the experience of the series for most readers and viewers. The author does a great job incorporating important philosophical insights in a direct and digestible manner that is accessible to readers who didn't major in Comp Lit, but does so without sacrificing meaning for the sake of simplicity.

Will be giving as a gift to my friends who love the series!
Reads like a charm.

Mobilizing many modes of exciting thought using the familiarity of the series as a comfortable couch to rest on, it avoids the heavy bog of academic jargon and allows the intrigue to remain unmarred by dense, unwieldy terms or concepts.
As a reader and watcher of GOT I found this equivalent to a high school paper by an interested reviewer. Too short for deep insights, not very original. He would have to do a great deal of expansion of his thoughts to make this worthwhile.
