“The Golden Horseshoe” is a very good Dashiell Hammett tale published in the Black Mask magazine in November 1924. The story is called “a complete novelette” because it is about 50 pages long. There are a couple of twists in it and a surprise ending that is a reasonable ending, even though virtually no one will anticipate it.
The Continental Op in the story is hired by an English woman through her lawyer to find her missing husband. She and her husband had a fight and he left her in anger. After a while, she realized that she acted hastily and wanted him back. She tried everything she could think of to get him back, without success. She was able to trace him to San Francisco, but there the leads ended. Then he contacted her and she began to send him money via the post office. She went to the post office where he would pick up the letters with the money, but she never saw him. The Op uses a couple of tricks and finds that he is in Mexico. He travels to Mexico to find him and pass on his wife’s desire. The story continues with about a half dozen murders.
Dashiell Hammett (1894-1961) is famous for his two and a half dozen short stories and his five novels Sam Spade in “The Maltese Falcon,” Nick and Nora Charles, in “The Thin Man,” the Continental Op in “The Dain Curse” and “Red Harvest,” and “The Glass Key,” with Ned Baumont, a novel that combines murder and politics.
The Continental Op, short for the operative of San Francisco’s office of the Continental detective Agency, is the name that Hammett gave to his private detectives. The stories are told in the first person without giving the name of the principal investigator. The Op is a man in his forties, short (five feet six inches), and some twenty pounds overweight (190 pounds); yet he is very competent, observant, smart and able to fight. He has feelings but is a master of deceit. The Agency is run by the “old man” in his seventies who is “a shell without human feelings whatsoever,” but he likes and respects the Op.
Very exciting reading!!!!!
The story lines were good but the outdated slang was too much. I couldn't stay focused on the plot. I was interested after a reference to Hammett in another book that I had enjoyed. I realize that my perception was flawed. Nevertheless, I didn't enjoy the read.
I like short story mysteries. I enjoy the continental op but I do not believe they are realistic. That much fist fighting is nonsense! So is all the underworld killing. And a whole lot more. But by just skipping the nonsensical fights I enjoy them fine.
